On a gray Sunday morning in an industrial space downtown, there are poached eggs lazily oozing over mountains of Brussels sprouts mac and cheese. There are warm macerated strawberries polka-dotting sweet goat cheese grits. Waitstaff ferry spicy, produce-laden Bloody Marias to plain wooden folding tables. In a corner, downtown-based Handsome Coffee Roasters scribble out lattes. Neighbors in neon scarves linger in an herb-studded garden far beyond their reservation times.

It makes one wonder: Why don’t more Sunday mornings across L.A. look like this?

Some things never change. Take the original Du-par’s, for example. Opened in 1938, smack dab in the middle of the Los Angeles Farmer’s Market at 3rd and Fairfax, Du-Par’s has been slinging hash to stars and starry-eyed dreamers since the Golden Age of Hollywood.

So why does its interior look like a Denny’s?

Comedian Galloway Allbright tackles this question and more in an in-depth analysis of Du-Par’s enduring appeal, and why, for a comedian, it offers shelter from the two-drink-minimum storm.

Galloway: I strongly recommend we order our own thing and then get a communal plate of pancakes. They are a delight. Nobody wants to put down a whole order of pancakes by themselves, though. It’s like ordering your own cake. You don’t go anywhere and go, “I’ll have a cake for my meal.” Unless it’s ice cream cake, but they don’t have ice cream pancakes here.

There aren’t a lot of people who would attempt, or could stomach, tasting 30 burgers over the course of a few days, but that’s exactly what Mendocino Farms owner Mario Del Pero and chef Jason Travi did. The beefy marathon had a purpose: The two set out to create “the city’s most perfect burger” for Del Pero’s Blue Cow Kitchen + Bar, a new sandwich “think tank” set to open in downtown Los Angeles this coming February. But they had to see what was out there first, and in the end, they found what they thought to be the top five burgers in L.A.

“We wanted to evaluate how other restaurants were executing the elements we knew would be integral to our own burger,” says Del Pero. “The burger blend, the balance of buttery and savory taste, overall seasoning and grind; the bun; and the accoutrements, to see if they elevate or distract from the overall bite.”

You’d think Travi, who’s cooked in some of the best restaurants in the city (Spago, La Terza, Fraiche), could handle it. “Eating burgers through Los Angeles sounded like a great idea at first, and then it turned ugly,” he says. “First you get the meat sweats, then the elevated heart rate.”

But it paid off.

Receive A Home Inspection Letter? It's A Scam.:

Angelenos, if you receive a letter claiming that your home is slated for inspection by Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) personnel, feel free to shred, recycle or save it to show the police. The letter is part of a scam recently discovered by the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD).

On Wednesday a Pacoima resident received said letter, which stated that his home was scheduled to be inspected by the LAFD for hazardous materials, mold, exit ways and fire alarm systems. The scam artists printed the bogus letter on City of Los Angeles black letterhead stationary and identified James K. Hahn as L.A. mayor and was “signed” by William Bamattre, former fire chief.

Homeowners should call 911 if visited by persons claiming to be LAFD personnel and seeking to perform inspection. The LAPD is currently investigating the fraudulent activities. Per a LAPD release, the elderly and vulnerable citizens are typically the targets of this type of sham, which usually results in burglary and other crimes.

Anyone with information regarding the scam should call Foothill Area Burglary Detectives at 818-834-3115. If calling during non-business hours or on the weekend, tipsters should dial 1-877-LAPD-24-7 (1-877-527-3247). Anonymous tipsters should call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (1-800-222-8477), text tip to 274637 (all text messages should begin with the letters “LAPD”) or visit the LAPD website, click on “WebTips” and follow the prompts.
